Mérida is the capital of the Mexican state of Yucatán. We flew into Cancun, but drove to Mérida the following day as we decided to make it our base for visiting the Mayan ruins at Uxmal and Chichen Itza. Mérida is a pretty city and we spent most of our time in Zócalo (Plaza Mayor). I loved the colorful buildings, and the streets and restaurants were nicely lit for Christmas.
The Cathedral of Mérida, completed in 1598, is the oldest cathedral in the Americas. We went for a stroll along Paseo de Montejo which is supposed to resemble Paris’s Champs Elysées, but I certainly did not get that feel. There were some upscale shops along the boulevard and even a Starbucks!
